The Challenge
The National Trust aimed to improve visitor access paths at Saltram, a Grade II Registered Park and Garden. The work area included high-value trees—many mature or veteran specimens with heritage and habitat significance. The key challenge was evaluating arboricultural constraints early to ensure any design proposals were feasible and conservation-compliant.
The Solution
Land & Heritage conducted a detailed BS5837 Stage 1 survey using mobile GIS tools to map and assess 80 trees. We categorised each by health, longevity, and value, and advised on no-dig construction and selective path realignments. These insights were essential in informing impact assessments and minimising risk to trees.
The Result
The survey revealed significant arboricultural sensitivities—including veteran oaks and ornamental heritage trees—prompting the client to reconsider the planned upgrades. Our clear, data-led recommendations helped the National Trust make an informed decision to avoid works in this area, preserving the integrity of the landscape.
