Woodland Creation & Management Planning
The Challenge
Woodland creation and management often intersect with rich historic landscapes. Subtle or extensive heritage features—both visible and buried—can be at risk without proper understanding and planning. Our clients needed expert guidance to ensure woodland projects respected and protected the archaeological integrity of their land.
The Solution
Land & Heritage brought together woodland and heritage expertise to deliver fully informed strategies. Our arboricultural and ecology teams collaborated closely with appointed archaeologists to assess sites and, where appropriate, carry out Historic Environment Impact Assessments (HEIA). These informed both woodland design and long-term management, integrating archaeology from the outset of each project.
The Result
Our integrated approach allowed clients to move forward with confidence:
At Stannon, Bodmin Moor, pollen analysis confirmed the historic woodland context of prehistoric monuments, supporting sympathetic planting.
At Wembury Barton, geophysical survey data was overlaid with GIS mapping to precisely avoid sub-surface archaeology.
At Trebartha Estate, historic mining features were mapped and protected within the woodland management strategy.
Each project benefited from expert-led, heritage-sensitive woodland planning that both avoids harm and enhances the historic landscape.
