About us

Land and Heritage was formed following a merger between Black Sheep Consultants and Wildlife Woodlands. The three directors and principal consultants are Simon Humphreys, Stephen Lees and Matt Jackson. We have extensive experience of both consultancy and contracting work so we can offer either consultancy grounded in reality or a comprehensive package of consultancy and delivery.

Our wider team of staff, key associates and dedicated contractors allows us to build a highly specialised skills set capable of dealing with any tasks, from bats surveys, archaeological assessments and heritage architects to tree surgery, landscape construction and ecology fencing/barriers.

  • Simon Humphreys

Simon was until recently Principal Ecologist with Pell Frischmann, a large multi-disciplinery consultancy, with experience of large civil engineering and commercial contracts. A forester and botanist by training, Simon has previous worked for Tamar Consulting which is part of the West Country Rivers Trust and was the founding Managing Director and for Silvanus Services and the Silvanus Trust back in the 1980’s.
  • Stephen Lees

Stephen ran the first version of Wildlife Woodlands in the 1980s and 1990s, offering contracting services to a wide range of conservation organisations and land managers. He later ran the business within BTCV Enterprises before later moving on a to career of canal restoration with British Waterways and then Recreation Manager with the Forestry Commission. He still likes to get his hands dirty, but is now more often managing others to undertake the contract work!
  • Matt Jackson

Matt began his career as a gardener with the National Trust, working at Scotney Castle, and then Gardens and Estates Manager at Sissinghurst in Kent. After 25 years with the National Trust he went on to establish Black Sheep Consultants, which specialised in the heritage landscape sector. Matt has particular skills in horticulture and historic landscapes, and in presenting them to a diverse audience. He is also a trained arborist and Chair of the Trustees at The Garden House, Devon.
